Objectif The SELF II project is a follow on project to SELF. The overall aim of the SELF II project is to determine the absolute sea level and its variations and to use them in a comprehensive way to study the present interactions as well as those of the recent past among the ocean, the atmosphere and the Earth's crust and to develop appropriate models to predict future aspects. To improve the long-term monitoring of sea-level variability by applying the most advanced geodetic techniques, including satellite altimetry and airborne laser; to provide additional sea-level related constraints for the validation of climate models; to study past sea levels in the Mediterranean in order to further our understanding of the current processes; to assess the potential hazards in coastal areas in the Mediterranean and to provide a basis for developing strategies to mitigate these hazards. To reach the stated objectives a complex of different techniques will be adopted which includes the Global Positioning System, Water Vapor Radiometry, Absolute Gravimetry, Satellite Altimetry, Airborne Laser Altimetry and Geological Observations of markers of former sea levels.
