Dynamic Models to predict and scale-up the impact of environmental change on biogeochemical cycling

Objetivo

(i) to apply and evaluate biogeochemical models at intensively studied (and manipulated) catchments and sites, (ii) to use these models to scale up in space from the catchment/stand to the regional and continental scale, and (iii) to use these models to scale up in time from observations over several years to predict future impacts over decades under scenarios of global change, acid deposition, and land use.
Special emphasis will be given to the techniques for regionalisation.

This project (DYNAMO) is proposed to be carried out by a multi-national, multi-disciplinary partnership of scientists whose common aim is to integrate dynamic models of biogeochemistry within a spatial framework, extrapolating the understanding of systems functioning at the individual stand and site level to the larger units of ecotype, landscape, region, and continent. Therefore the project defines three main objectives, namely; (i) to apply and evaluate biogeochemical models at intensively studied (and manipulated) catchments and sites, (ii) to use these models to scale up in space from the catchment/stand to the regional and continental scale, and (iii) to use these models to scale up in time from observations over several years to predict future impacts over decades under scenarios of global change, acid deposition, and land use. Special emphasis will be given to the techniques for regionalisation. DYNAMO will not involve the collection of new field data, but will involve the merging and harmonising of existing databases.
DYNAMO is specifically designed to address the objectives of the Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Initiative (TERI) Science plan theme 5: Integration, up scaling and scenario studies. DYNAMO focuses on moving from short-term site-specific ecosystem experiements (conducted as part of other EU projects) to long-term landscape and regional predictions of the impacts of global change, acid deposition, and land use on terrestrial ecosystems, and the resultant effects upon aquatic ecosystems. DYNAMO will place the site-specific results in an European context.
