Objetivo To analyse the climate signals in Greenland and Antarctic ice cores, and to study North-South climatic connections and their dynamics. The project consists of three parts: Further studies of ice core data, in particular based on the GRIP core, modelling the isotopic composition of precipitation to help in the interpretation of the ice core signals, and climate and carbon cycle modelling to analyse the mechanisms of North-South climatic connections. The ice core analyses will include study of possible chemical transformations altering the isotopic composition of CO2 in the GRIP core, and further analysis of the isotopic composition, trace gases and dust contents. From these data the climatic forcings and conditions (temperature changes) will be refined and compared with other proxy data (in particular the oceanic records). Special attention will be placed on the correlation and phasing of the signals between North and South, and on abrupt changes, and on estimates of climate sensitivity based on the simultaneous records of forcing factors and temperature. A detailed modelling study will be performed to better quantify the ice core palaeothermometer (Oxygen and Deuterium isotopic contents). This study will be based on the direct simulation of the isotopes in GCMs, and will include the use of finer grid GCMs (NASA/GISS, LMD and ECHAM model versions). Mechanisms responsible for North-South long term climate connections will be analysed with the LLN two dimensional (zonally averaged) climate model. Specific questions that will be addressed are the role of the external forcings, greenhouse gases, land-ice and sea-level connection etc. A relatively simple biospheric carbon cycle submodel will be used to study feedback to the physical climate system. Explicit inclusion of isotopic contents (in particular 13C) will be used to compare with observational data. Related to these studies will be the development of continental biospheric carbon cycle and vegetation (sub)models. These will be used to study vegetation changes related to climatic changes and including albedo feedbacks.
