European Program for Transition Prediction

Ziel

Objectives and content EUROTRANS, the European programme on Transition prediction, is a continuing technology research started with Brite Euram ELFIN I and ELFIN II programmes. The main objectives are to analyse and to improve the laminar-turbulent transition prediction methods, both from a fundamental point of view and for practical applications.

EUROTRANS is divided in two tasks
- Task 1 deals with transition prediction using the local, linear stability theory and the well known en method.

For this purpose, experimental data obtained during the ELFIN II wind tunnel tests will be selected and analysed carefully with the objective of obtaining correlated n factors at the onset of transition Task 1 will also include two subtasks devoted to the improvement of a simplified method for transition prediction and to the application of the local theory for complex basic flows resulting from Navier-Stokes computations;
Task 2 consists in applying more general and more complex approaches based on non local methods in order to demonstrate their feasibility for practical problems. The first step will be to choose a limited number of significant test cases of Task 1 and of ELFIN I and ELFIN II flight experiments.

These test cases will be evaluated first with the non local, linear approach and the resulting transition n factors will be compared with those obtained in Task 1. It is then planned to perform non local, non linear computations for typical test cases exhibiting strong interactions between cross flow and Tollmien-Schlichting disturbances. It is hoped that these computations would explain why the local theory fails in certain cases to predict the onset of transition.
