Process Recovery and Optimisation of Mass and Energy in Pulp & Paper Industry

Objectives and content

The anticipated benefit of this development can be realised from the figures provided below.

Based on the in-plant experience of the involved end users (Celbi and Portucel) and the available statistics, the estimated loss of waste of fibres during processing is currently about 10 Kg per ton of pulp produced. A typical plant (e.g. Setubal plant in Portugal) produces about 360,000 tons per year and there are about 48 such plants in the European Union with a total pulp production of 29.5 million tons (22). The cumulative loss of fibre in all such plants then amounts to about 0,3 million tons per year, representing a production loss of about 100 MECU per year (on a cost basis of 350 ECU per ton of pulp). In case of paper industries, who process the pulp further, there is additional wastage which is lower than in pulp mills. The total of such loss is estimated to be about 20 MECU.

The total fibre wastage in both cases, accounts for about 120 MECU per year in the European Union. A saving of 50% in both cases represent about 60 MECU per year. There is an increased energy consumption which can be related to the wasted fibre. An estimation of the reduced energy consumption will yield a saving of about 16 MECU per year. Thus, the total of mass and energy savings will account for 76 MECU per year.

These will additionally result in reduced pollution to the environment, reduced raw material (wood) usage leading to reduced tree cutting with consequent improvements in the ecological system. Benefits in these areas are self evident and are difficult to quantify in ECU terms.

Apart from contributing to the Pulp and Paper Industry and to the environment and ecology, the developed system will have other applications addressing other industrial sectors with attendant commercial potentials. The system itself is estimated to cost about 100 KECU to an user, which will fetch income to the developers of the consortium. A global market for such a product is foreseen, representing about 15 MECU in total. The Consortium possesses all the expertise required for the development, test fields for the validation and the marketing and dissemination infrastructure.
