Impact of climate change on hydrological and water resource systems in the European Community

Ziel

The general objectives of the existing project are to provide quantitative information on possible changes in the water balance in Europe, and to provide guidance on the management of water resources in the face of climate change. The project operates at the European scale (on a resolution of 0.5x0.5°), at the regional scale (the Rhine basin) and the catchment scale (several case study catchments). The links between the various elements are through a consistent impact assessment methodology and the use of consistent climate change scenarios. Climate change scenarios are based on IPCC scenarios.
The proposed new partners will essentially be undertaking additional catchment-scale case studies (objective iii of the original project). These studies, like those of the original participants, will be using consistent climate change scenarios and a consistent methodology. This consistency means that it will be possible, for the first time, to compare directly the estimated impacts of climate change in different catchments and different countries.
The new partners will also provide data and expertise to enable the extension of the large-scale hydrological modelling to Eastern and central Europe: this will allow, again for the first time, a true continental-scale assessment of the potential impacts of global warming on hydrological regimes and water resources.
The new partners will be integrated fully into the existing project: they will be required to coordinate their activities with the existing workplan, and to contribute to progress reports and the final project report.
