Obiettivo The objective of this project is to investigate the performances of vegetable oils, such as rapeseed oil, and of their derivatives and blends, as liquid biofuels for energy production and transport. The research programme will deal with physical and chemical aspects of atomization, thermal stability, pyrolysis, combustion and formation of soot and pollutants aspects of the use of liquid biofuels.Several studies have been conducted in the past, or are ongoing, to qualify various biomass liquid fuels as renewable energy sources. However, these studies have been generally conducted with a 'test' approachwithout considering in detail all the aspects related to combustion characteristics of these fuels. This project aims to start to fill this gap by bringing together European combustion scientists having large experience in combustion studies and willing to use their expertise to explore this new area of R&D.In order to have an appreciable effect on European agriculture problems and global environmental issues the substitution of conventional fuels by renewable energy sources should be substantial. This necessitates in favour of a substantial R&D programme to analyze all the aspects of the problems related to the substitution of fossil fuels. This would include a serious assessment of the differences and similarities between atomization, vaporization, combustion and pollutant formation characteristics of conventional and biofuels. This project wishes to start such a programme on the use of vegetable oils and their derivatives and blends as alternative renewable liquid fuels in diesel engines and furnaces for transport and energy production. This project is to our knowledge the first coordinated Europeanaction on basic combustion problems of vegetable oils. The project is innovative in many respects. Laboratory type facilities and large scale facilities will be jointly used by the partners to answer relevant questions with regard the above problems and also to benefit from their fertilizing interaction. The project has a well balanced structure between experimental and modelling approaches. The potential benefits of this project span over several areas. From an economic point of view, the use of vegetable oils as biofuels will induce a more balanced development between agricultural and industrial sectors. In this respect, this project is supported by the Conseil Regional Centre in France. Another benefit of this project is its positive environmental impact. Finally, the possibility of creating local energy networks is an important social and economic benefit for remote areas and less developed countries.
