Integrated System for Analysis and Characterization of the Sea floor

Objectif

The overall objective of ISACS is to prove the feasibility of analysis and characterization of the seafloor by exploitation and suitable integration of data gathered from commercially available sonar equipment.
The project will treat acoustic backscattered data representative of a volume of sediment coming from multibeam echosounders, side-scan-sonars and bottom penetraling parametric sonars. The project will design an integrated representalion of such data, il will develop signal and image processing tools for extracting the major features from the data, it will determine the geoacoustic properties from the acoustic backscattered data and it will detect and possible identify buried or semi-buried objects. The whole chain of the processing will be done in an automatic way.
The feasibility of the ISACS approach will be verified by a series of field experiment conducted at well-controlled sites in the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean and in the Baltic sea. The acoustic data will be complemented and compared with geotechnical and in-situ seismic measurement.
