EUROPEAN SYNCHROTRON RESEARCH AT BESSY

Objetivo

The 'Berliner Elektronenspeicherring-Gesellschaft fur Synchrotronstrahlung mbH' (BESSY GmbH) is a non-profit making company, which operates the only dedicated high brightness source of synchrotron radiation (SR) in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) and soft x-ray (XUV) regions of the spectrum (photon energy region -5 eV to -2 keV) in Germany. The service-oriented facility BESSY I has been in operation since 1982 and has offered routinely more than 3000 hours of SR/year for its users since 1991. The main areas of activity have been basic and applied research in several scientific disciplines as well as metrology and x-ray lithography for industrial applications. For running the well-established SR facility BESSY I the BESSY GmbH employs 76 staff members and has an annual turn over of ca. 8 MECU.
In addition a new high-brilliance third generation SR light source, BESSY II, will go into operation at the beginning of 1998. With the present proposal BESSY intends to make SR readily available to the interested outstanding scientists in Europe, particularly those in peripheral countries of the European Community, who do not have national SR centers. What we propose is essentially a continuation of the current EC-HCM/LSI programme, which is considered by our users as a means to innovative and demanding science towards the technological challenges of the next century. EC researchers have access to 35 specialized measuring stations. including 2 x-ray microscopes, which are connected to various types of monochromators.
A subtotal of 11 experimental stations is readily available for EC researchers. Typically, these stations are equipped with electron spectrometers and/or various types of electron and photon detectors and the necessary equipment for sample preparation, characterization and manipulation. Most of the researchers who submitted a proposal want to exploit these stations for electronic and atomic structure investigations by means of photoemission and x-ray absorption techniques. For particular experimental requirements a collaboration can be arranged with a user who operates suitable equipment, such as electron spin polarization or spatially resolving electron spectrometers.
