Objective The determination of trace and ultratrace element concentration in steels is required for two main reasons: - the drastic influence of some trace and ultratrace elements on their properties; - the increasing need to put on the market only materials free of elements that are harmful for the environment or for health. The objective of this project is to produce operational protocols for evaluating the trace element contents in steels from scrap through to final products by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, (ICP-MS) and a guideline for correct use of ICP-MS.
