Objectif The main objective of the project is to establish the relationships between the fatigue behaviour of welded rails and the residual stresses, microstructure and defects of the welded joint. In order to fulfil this aim an experimental programme based on the comparative testing (on small laboratory specimens and on welded rail components) of different combinations of rail steels and welding techniques will be carried out. Moreover, engineering fracture mechanics models will be developed and applied to assess the importance of local residual stresses on the fatigue behaviour of welded rails.
