Obiettivo The project will supplement existing European initiatives towards forecasting economic and employment trends with a broadened and deepened intellectual framework and permit to put short term economic developments in perspective with the long term goal of sustainable development. Based on an extended version of the existing system dynamics UK-ECCO model, simulations will be done on the European scale in order to illustrate the short- and medium- term economic and employment impacts of a sustainable policy, generating a.o. insights on the future development of employment opportunities and on the technologies needed to foster sustainable economic developments.In order to provide useful information about possible scenarios for an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development for Europe the study will include efforts to: - develop a better understanding of the economic dynamics and their influence on all strategies towards sustainable economies, by offering the opportunity to compare policy and R&D strategies as refers to their respective impact on growth and employment; - investigate the bottlenecks on the road to sustainable economic development and to assess acceleration potentials; - develop strategies to enhance the move towards sustainable production and consumption patterns while taking care in particular of the employment effects; - identify employment-friendly technologies and the resulting changes in the structures of employment and skills required. The core purpose of the study is to develop and to apply a tool to improve the information basis for decision makers, enabling them to take the kinds of side effects and rebound mechanisms into account that are not obvious in policy planning so far. Results will be presented with the intention to give at least hints at the most socially conscious policy and R&D strategies towards sustainable economic development.
