Instruments for sustainable regional development

Objective

To identify the key ecological, economic and social determinants of sustainability at the regional level through formulation of an evaluation framework for sustainable regional development policies and strategies.

OBJECTIVES:
To identify the key ecological, economic and social determinants of sustainability at the regional level through formulation of an evaluation framework for sustainable regional development policies and strategies.
DESCRIPTION:
Sustainable development requires a change in more traditional regional development policies. New approaches in such policies, which correspond to the basic objectives of sustainable development require a more elaborate set of reliable policy instruments. The project analyses and compares experiences gained in Austria, Germany, Italy, Ireland and Switzerland concerning the sustainability of regional policies by:
i) elaborating an evaluation framework for regional development policies and strategies in terms of sustainability, using a set of quantitative and qualitative indicators;
ii) analyzing and comparing experiences gained in typical regions of five European countries;
iii) identifying "key factors of sustainability" at the regional level and establishing the range of policy options;
iv) establishing a set of most suitable and effective policy instruments for the sustainable reorientation of regional development.
The research will make it possible to assess the most effective policy tools - including legal, financial and knowledge-based instruments - institutional conditions and management procedures for a sustainable regional development. Specific recommendations will be formulated for policymakers and project managers at European, national, regional and local levels.
