Cultural and policy determinants of sustainable tourism development.

Ziel

To assess the relationship between tourism as an economic and social activity, and the environment. To identify and analyze those elements of the socio-political and institutional context which facilitate or hinder sustainable tourist development.

OBJECTIVES:
To assess the relationship between tourism as an economic and social activity, and the environment. To identify and analyze those elements of the socio-political and institutional context which facilitate or hinder sustainable tourist development.
DESCRIPTION:
The project examines the impact of tourism on environmentally sensitive coastal areas in three Mediterranean countries: Greece, Spain and Italy. Particular attention is devoted to a comparison of environmental impact of local ownership of tourist enterprises, and of tourist developments owned by non-resident national/multi-national entrepreneurs respectively. In each of the countries examined, the project assesses the political and cultural determinants of damage to the coastal environment in two contrasting locations, one with minimal environmental damage, and one with substantial damage. The work also contains interviews with tour operators, tourists, local business people, and residents of the studied communities in order to determine how each group conceptualises issues of sustainable tourism and their involvement in the policy process. The research design allows a number of comparisons across different countries and across different kinds of environmental outcomes:
i) comparison of the extent to which national environmental policy programmes are connected to those of the tourist sector at the national and local levels, and the implementation of these programmes at the local level;
ii) examination of local determinants of tourist development, such as the impact of local cultures, the influence on developmental strategies of both local business and large national investors, the influence of local political culture, the impact of environmentalist movements and of EU-level policies.
In addition to ethnographic research , the methodology is a
combination of document analysis and interviews with policy
makers and stake-holders. The policy relevance of the project lies in a better understanding of the impact of tourist
development in different local contexts. It also aims at
achieving a transfer of knowledge between local cases and
between countries. This project seeks to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and local culture, that is, to provide
guidelines for policies towards environmentally and culturally sustainable developments in tourism.
