Estimation and analysis of strong ground motion from extended earthquake faults for seismic hazard reduction

Objetivo

The purpose of this project is the better understanding of the source process during large events which involve slip on an extended fault plane to produce better models of source excitation as input in the strong ground motion estimation in seismic zones.

1. To be aware of collecting good accelerometric data in european active regions.

2. To focus our study on the determination of slip from seismic recordings, comparing different available methods; the same synthetic records will be interpreted by the different partners and results xompared with the input solution. This should help us to emphasize the resolved parameters of the inverse problem and to select the necessary contrains (positivity, rupture velocity,...).

3. If possible in terms of records to apply to events in Mediterranean Basin: Aigion (June 1995). In the other case we will work on another data set from USA or Japan.

4. The observations will be compared with new theoretical results that we develop for 3D numerical simulation of rupture to understand the reality of the "Heaton pulse".

5. A realistic modelling of strong ground acceleration spectra using stochastic methods will also be developed to take into account directivity or other low frequency behaviour of the source.
