To Establish Concurrent Engineering Based "Design for Integrated X-methodologies" for the preliminary and detailed design of aircraft sections

Objectif

Objectives and content
Competitive position of Europe's Aeronautical Industry depends on significant reductions in time-to-market and overall product costs, while enhancing quality and performance.
Due to the complex and multi-technological nature of aeronautics products, there are few opportunities to achieve these reductions by simply improving existing technologies and design tools in isolation. It is necessary to adopt a fully integrated design approach through changes in the overall process to completely realize the total benefits from existing and emerging technologies. The introduction of this integrated process will benefit directly the full development phase and will leave consequently more time for the preliminary phases where 80% of the costs are committed. During these later phases, the integrated process will allow more iteration to achieve the goals of 30% in time-to-market, 20% in production costs and 40% in maintenance costs, as mentioned in the workprogramme.
This stringent requirements of the Aeronautics Industry and its capability of demonstration of advanced generic technologies will enable early application of emerging technologies to other sectors.
The CEDIX project will focus on the design and development phases and will concentrate on integration of existing and emerging tools and their environments. Using the experience gained on several dedicated demonstrations of these technologies within the design of typical aircraft section, the integrated -design process will be progressively refined, leading to a fully Digital Product Definition within a Concurrent Engineering approach. The technologies considered are those having the largest potential benefit. They include both definition and analysis assistances, within a Digital Pre Assembly environment:
- Workflow management
- Finite element modelling
- Structural feature modelling
- Internal arrangement functionalities (maintainability, accessibility, assemblability)
- Electrical installation functionalities
- Manufacturability analysis
Outputs of the project will be a consolidated integrated design process, methodologies for the optimal use of existing and emerging tools and environments, and identification of user needs for new developments, based when necessary on dedicated prototyping.
The consortium comprises a group of major Aeronautical Companies having a wide range of expertise in the pioneering of new technologies and methodologies supported by a Research Laboratory specialized in computer integrated manufacturing and design.
