A Study of Ac Losses in (Bi2-xPbx) Sr2 Ca2 Cu3 O10+-delta/Ag Tapes. Relevant to Industrial High Power Applications

Objetivo

Objectives and content

This programme is a vertically integrated basic research programme incorporating universities; a research organisation and manufacturer and end-users. It aims to advance the implementation of high temperature superconducting electrical power engineering devices through increased knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of ac losses in (Bi2_xPbx) Sr2 Ca2 Cu3 (O)10+- delta /Ag tapes.

This will be achieved by manufacturing state-of-the-art superconducting tapes and fully characterising the losses at power alternating current frequencies (50-60Hz) using unique existing apparatus and by developing novel analytical methods - these will provide electrical and thermometric data of losses in self-field and in variable ac external fields up to 0.3T. A prototype ac transmission cable and an ac coil will be produced as demonstrators and a draft international standard in measurement of ac loss in (Bi2_xPbx) Sr2 Ca2 Cu3 (O)10+-delta/Ag tapes will be produced.

In parallel to the practical study the end-users of the technology will carry out design studies based on the data obtained. This transfer of technology to the industrial users from the university sector will assist superconductor tape manufacturers to optimise their product for low ac loss and thereby advancing EC industry towards the manufacturing of ac superconducting devices operating at 77 K.
