CYBERSPACE LEARNING FOR KIDS

The CL4K project is building an intercultural electronic learning network to equip the children of today with employment skills for tomorrow's Information Society. The network will offer on-line learning facilities and access to databases where children learn and play together, with ongoing support from teachers and parents. Access by schools, homes, libraries and youth services will also be possible. Additional features are the development of multimedia and group learning on themes such as the environment and children's rights, and an intercultural learning project for children, teachers and parents. The project involves more than 750 teachers, 2,500 parents and 12,500 children across Europe.



Children of today will form 15.1% of the European population by the 21st Century and be entering an employment market focused on the Information Society. These children have to be equipped with skills for ways of working that were not available to their parents and skills that will enhance their prospects when they join the workforce of the Information Society. The CL4K project aims to develop an intercultural electronic learning network across Europe for children aged 5-16 .The network will offer on-line facilities and provide an environment within which children can lean together and play together, teachers can develop and deliver learning activities, data bases of information and teaching and learning resources are accessed and parents can be involved in the process of education and child development.

The project will involve Children, Teachers and Parents from the UK, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Greece and Germany. The collaboration of 753 teachers, 12545 children, 2705 parents across Europe working with other specialists in the field.

The objectives of the project are

- To develop and implement an on-line telematic multimedia educational facility to be accessed by educational institutions, homes, libraries and youth services.

- To develop educational multimedia learning materials and offer collaborative learning project based work on the environment, science and technology, health and the rights of children.

- To develop and offer language learning courses on the network, primarily aimed at children over 11 years, in Spanish, English, German and French.

- To develop a European Intercultural Learning Project involving teachers, children and parents in each of the countries.

- To develop and initiate a 'Kidsspace' where children can have safe social interaction with other children across Europe.

- To develop an on-line educational service providing a database of information and learning resources to educational institutions and parents.

- To provide a forum for teachers and parents to discuss issues, foster links and exchange ideas and experiences in education.
