Objetivo WEB 4 GROUPS will develop and demonstrate a system for knowledge transfer between groups of European citizens. The web-based system will give research units, businesses or individuals a computer conferencing tool for cooperation and exchange of experience on virtually any topic, via a multimedia network. With World Wide Web extension facilities, users will for the first time be able to establish open or closed group communication links from any page. The system covers asynchronous communication, including access by e-mail, discussions linked to a Web page, and use of several languages.The purpose of the project is to provide, demonstrate and establish a commonly available standard service for the transfer of knowledge for European citizens. The resulting distributed web based group communication system will make available to research units, commercial enterprises or single persons a tool for co-operation and exchanging experience and advice on any topic in business, science, education, politics or leisure using a user-friendly multi-media network. By integrating and developing functional extensions for the World Wide Web, users will be able to start, participate and maintain open or closed group-communication links from any web-page, in a non-simultaneous fashion. The highly attractive WWW services currently available lack of a feature to post requests or exchange opinions or experience in a public forum or for the co-ordination of teams. Other successful group communication services like Usenet are getting outdated due to functional restrictions (insufficient support for: closed groups, authorizing, multimedia documents, information selection, hypertext).The basic functionality of the project application covers multi-media asynchronous group communication, including multi-media e-mail, linking a discussion group to a web-page, and security features. Advanced functionality supports multi-language discussions, inquiry tools, joint document production, and intelligent filters.As cost factors will have a strong influence of the long-term viability of the resulting telematic technologies, the project strongly emphasizes cost effectiveness for both the provider and user perspectives, as well as analysis of the effectiveness of the service provided from a pedagogical and socio-economic perspective.
