MULTIMODAL APPROACH FOR GNSS 1 IN EUROPEAN TRANSPORT A

Objetivo

The MAGNET-A project seeks to develop and assess user segment prototypes for prospective users of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Aspects included are availability, accuracy, integrity and continuity of service for civil, land, maritime and aviation applications. The project will establish an up-to-date view of requirements and constraints and define a validation plan. Prototypes will then be developed and verified in a test-bed simulating navigation satellite signals. Performance of the system and validation of user requirements will be verified through field trials on land, sea and in the air.

The objective of the MAGNET A project is to develop GNSS 1 (Global Navigation Satellite System) user segment prototypes and to assess their performance in terms of availability, accuracy, integrity and continuity of service through field trials involving civil, land, maritime and aviation users. The project will be coordinated by DASSAULT ELECTRONIQUE (Coordinator and in charge of the user segments). DAIMLER BENZ AEROSPACE, ALCATEL ESPACE and RACAL will take an active role in the project respectively as demonstration leader, GNSS 1 test-bed coordinator and responsible for the SKYFIX upgrades. The overall MAGNET A project is composed of two steps (I and II) described below.

Step I

The project will start with a first phase intended to update the user requirements and the qualification and operational constraints that would apply to GNSS 1 users devices, leading to the definition of the validation plan.

The second phase of the project will consist of the development of GNSS 1 user segments and the set-up of a laboratory test-bed designed to simulate GNSS-1 like signals. This test-bed will be used to verify the behaviour of the user equipment.

Step II

The third phase of the project will aim at the evaluation of the performance of GNSS 1 in field trials. Since at the time of the trials the EGNOS infrastructure will be limited to the ranging capability, the project team proposes to upgrade the SKYFIX network with real time wide area differential and integrity monitoring algorithms. The experiments performed with the users will then constitute a good validation of the user segments. Civil aviation experiments will be conducted on a LUFTHANSA AIRBUS to demonstrate en-route to CAT I performances. In addition, railway network management and maritime navigation in coastal waters experiments will be performed.
