TRAFFIC & CARGO SUPERVISION SYSTEM

Objective

TRACAR is aimed at a common telematics system and standard for the identification, positioning, and management of freight, goods or their accompanying documents when carried by more than one form of transport. The project will integrate and enhance established technologies for this purpose on a pilot delivery route, running from Esbjerg in Denmark through Germany and Switzerland to a town in Italy. Project development is expected to lead to an attractive low-cost system likely to revitalise railway freight transport and prove attractive to small and medium-sized enterprises.

The overall objective for the TRACAR project is to establish a common Telematic system/standard for the identification, positioning, supervision and management of cargo in a multi-modal set-up (cargo in terminals, on road-, railway-, sea and inland waterways), including the handling of freight documents.

Project Description :

The project builds on existing, but upgraded low frequency Tag/Transponder technology and other established technologies i.e. computer, radio-, tele- and technology. These technologies will become integrated and enhanced.

The pilot corridor of the project runs from a user (a slaughterhouse) in Esbjerg in Denmark through Germany and Switzerland to the end-user in Reggio Emilia in Italy (a town approx. 100 km south of Verona). The project consist of 14 partners in Denmark, Great-Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Project results :

The development of the system should lead to an attractive low cost system, which should bring cargo back to the railways (with all the advantages this implies), become attractive for the SME user group and support EU competition in the world market for cargo transport.
