Requirement/Benefit Definition Study leading to 4-D Meteorological Data Bases linked across Europe

Objetivo

The objective of the 4MIDABLE project is to specify the requirements for the meteorological aspects of operational prediction of future aircraft position in four dimensions. Both the short term prediction (20 minutes ahead) and the longer term (including air traffic flow management issues) will be addressed. In the former wind is the prime issue with effects of anti-icing as a secondary issue. In the latter fog and severe convective clouds (commonly, but not exclusively, cumulonimbus) are major considerations. In addition other hazardous meteorological phenomena have to be addressed. In a European context all these mechanisms for causing low level wind shear will be given comparable priority.

The project will therefore concentrate on better quantifying the state of the art of forecasting these various phenomena and evaluate the expected improvements, obtaining a better specification for the requirements for these forecasts, obtaining a specification of the sensors required to facilitate forecasts of the required accuracy, quantifying the effect of wind variability on 4-dimensional navigation, exploiting complementary characteristics of different sensors for improved cumulonimbus detection and nowcasting, defining new lines of action for RTD in this area.
