Design of the hydrogen prototype for a plasma neutron source

Ziel

The main task within the current research will be the design of an experimental facility, called the Hydrogen Prototype of the Neutron Source (HPNS) at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. The HPNS facility is an axisymmetric mirror machine with expander for MHD stabilisation. It will be operated on hydrogen plasma. Its plasma parameters will come as close as possible to those in the future neutron source. The main target parameters are contained as follows:

Mirror to mirror distance - 10 m
Magnetic field at midplane - 0.7 T
at mirrors - 15 -20 T
Injection energy - 15 -30 keV
Total power of neutral beams - 15 MW
Pulse duration - 20 ms
Injection angle - 30
Max. power from grid - 20 MW
Plasma desity - 10{14} cm{-3}
Electron temperature - 300 eV

Another task concerns the development of numerical codes for modeling plasma parameters including neutral beam injection and gas penetration, considering empirical scaling taken from experiments.

Finally, the feasibility of designing a proper neutronic lay-out of the future source will be investigated.
