Study of the vibrational energy redistribution in highly-excited molecules both in gas phase and on surfaces

Objective



This research project involves the study of the vibrational energy redistribution in highly-excited polyatomic molecules by looking at the associated relaxation and dissociation processes, both in gas phase and when the molecules are absorbed on surfaces. Some of the applications of this study will be considered. Small, intermediate-size or even complex or biological molecules in gas phase, and UV laser radiation, will be investigated by using: laser double-irradiation technique, time-resolved Raman probing technique, non-resonant laser desorption, reflectron time of flight mass spectrometry, and interferometric techniques. Most of these techniques were developed in the laboratories involved in the project.

Some fundamental problems will also be considered, in particular the dynamics of vibrational collisional relaxation where ultrafast rates occur, and the vibrotranslational relaxation. The existence of a possible substructure in the vibrational molecular quasi-continuum and the nature of the non-resonant laser-induced desorption will be investigated as well.
