The influence of values, norms and attitudes on the establishment of market economies

Obiettivo

This research project aims at examining the relationship between the internal and external institutions of a society.

The main objectives of the project are: to provide evidence of a close relationship between values, norms and attitudes of a society and the performance of market economic and democratic institutions and to investigate the nature of this relationship; to define an elite survey in which the above hypotheses are tested (based on the theoretical knowledge about the causality of the relationship); and to use the gathered data to test the research hypothesis against other hypotheses of economists and political scientists and to show its superiority in explaining the difficulties in the reform process.

The findings of the project will endeavour to answer how the causality runs between the variables, and to show that certain values, norms and attitudes, especially legal consciousness and credibility, can explain the described difficulties in the reform process better than standard economic models.
