The post-Soviet Eurasian space: the Russians, Russian culture and the revival of Islam, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Volga region, Central Russia

Obiettivo

Renewed Russian nationalism has been one of the preconditions and consequences of the present crises. Another effect has been that Islam is gaining in importance, outgrowing that of everyday religion, and becoming the vehicle of re-structuring social relations, the way of life, ethnic re-identification and renewing the ideology and politics of the indigenous peoples of Central Asia, the northern Caucasus and the Volga region. Inside Russia Muslims account for 12 per cent of the population. The growing Muslim diaspora is securing its economic and socio-political status in the largest cities of Central Russia, including Moscow.

This project will help identify the particular kinds of co-relation between the tendencies of re-islamization in the eastern republics of the NIS, the migration of the Russian speaking population from these republics, the economic and political situation in Russia, and the European security issue.

The project aims : to appreciate the background to the break-down of the Soviet Union for the development of Eurasia as a specific cultural, psychological and intellectual space; to investigate the major cultural trends and phenomena contributing to the formation of the post-Soviet Eurasian space and, accordingly, to look into the nature of changes going on in the act of ethnic identification and ethnic behaviour among the peoples of Eurasia; to analyze the contemporary civilizational as well as geopolitical structure of this area and to consider in this regard the level and tendencies of the interaction of the Russian (Christian) and Muslim cultures in this region; to investigate the major forces and processes that affect the profile of the Eurasian space: Islamic revival (re-islamization) in the oriental republics of the former Soviet Union and the strengthening of the position of the Muslim diaspora in Central Russia; migration of the Russians and the Russian speaking population from the Muslim areas and the impact of these processes on the nature of development and the orientation of the NIS; potential and dynamics of the social self-adjustment of the Russians in the oriental republics and of the Muslim ethnic groups in Central Russia.
