Materials for medieval and modern Armenian history in the archives and libraries of Europe

Cel

This research aims to identify subjects of common interest in the history of the relations between Armenians and Europeans as they are recorded in documents kept in the partner countries Italy, France and Switzerland. After identifying and making an inventory of the documents, the research will concentrate on specific subjects with a view to publication.

The project will cover research into the following areas of common interest: business and political relations from the 12th to the14th century between Armenians in Sicily, France and Italy, as documented in archives and libraries in Paris, Lyon, Genoa and Venice; relations between the Armenian and the Catholic Churches in the medieval and modern ages, the aim of this study is not so much to analyze the materials in the archives of the Holy See as to explore documents which are little known up to this moment in Italian cities such as Bologna (Marsili Collection) and Ferrara (Papasian Collection); the foundation of the Armenian political parties, their programme and the activities of Armenian intellectuals during the 19th and 20th centuries in Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland.
