Typology of grammatical categories

Objetivo

This project will contribute to the description of the languages of the Caucasus, in particular those which are endangered, to make advances in linguistic typology, to improve the training of younger linguists in Russia and to enhance their opportunities to gain worldwide recognition for their work.

The project will first focus on an investigation of Godoberi, one of the unwritten minority languages of Daghestan (north-east Caucasus), and to the examination of the implications of Daghestanian languages for linguistic typology.

By focusing on a little known language endangered by extinction, this grammar will add considerably to the knowledge about Caucasian languages. There are reasons to believe that Godoberi is structurally unusual in several respects and the reference grammar of Godoberi to be produced will be of great interest to typologists. When preparing a survey of grammatical categories of Godoberi and its Daghestian relatives, particular attention will be paid initially to nominal categories, including case, localization, number and gender, and to the structure of nominal inflection-areas. The project is building on research already under way in Moscow but which has been severely hampered by lack of funds. In addition to supporting field work in the Caucasus and analysis and writing up in Moscow, arrangements will be made for younger Russian researchers to make contact with western linguistics, particularly those working in typology.
