Improving curriculum-bound foreign language learning materials

Objectif

International understanding and co-operation, fostering social and economic progress, requires the intensive use of foreign languages. In a broad and long-term perspective, the improvement of foreign language learning (FLL) in school environments, which reaches millions of children, is therefore of the utmost importance. However, generally speaking, school-bound FLL programmes do not profit enough from adequate scientific attention and financed research, although past decennia have given us a wealth of analyses and insights pertaining to more effective FLL processes.

This project will focus on the following research activities with specific objectives: compare and evaluate research done in the field of FLL materials in the participating countries, in order to assess and implement co-ordinated criteria for more efficiency in FLL materials; conduct didactic analysis and implementation of lexical, grammatical and cultural contents, as well as contrasts between the mother tongue and the foreign language; develop and implement communicative strategies and testing in relation to an organized learning process; determine the dynamic relations between materials, methodology and teacher training strategies and develop proper instruments for teacher training; and disseminate and implement research results through educational networks.

The main areas concerned are: comparison and evaluation of research done on FLL materials in the participating countries; lexical composition of FLL materials; grammatical composition of FLL materials; communicative strategies in FLL materials; cultural components in FLL materials; teacher training strategies; dissemination and implementation of research results through educational networks.
