Objectif This networking project will bring together research teams which have a leading position in the field of physics of point contacts. Such devices are very small contacts between two pieces of metal or superconductor (~10 nm). Conventionally, point contacts are made by mechanical methods. The project will be concentrated on new topics, exploiting newly developed techniques to realize point contacts by nanofabrication and mechanically controllable break junctions, very high magnetic fields and the intriguing properties of new materials. Among the many aspects of solid state physics that can be studied using point contacts, the project will focus on the following aspects: tunnelling contacts of high-TC superconductors in high magnetic fields; magnetoconductance fluctuations and zero-bias anomalies in ballistic contacts; and magnetic impurities in point contacts. An international conference on point contact spectroscopy will be organised by members involved in the project.
