Magnetic structures, nanostructures and magnetic membranes

Objective

This project is aimed at supporting two active programmes and creating a new synergism to fabricate and characterise a novel physical system: a magnetic membrane.

The magnetic properties of rare earth metals and their alloys will be studied with particular emphasis on magnetic structures with discommensurations or spin-slips. The measurements will be extended to other magnetic materials and to thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy as well as to high surface area samples such as membranes.

Novel nanoscale structures will be fabricated by electrochemical and other physical processes involving self-organisation. Particular emphasis will be given to membrane structures and their electrical and optical properties. A method for creating magnetic membranes will be developed.
