Experimental studies of spin dynamics in antiferromagnets

Obiettivo

Recording on a disk in a computer implies a rapid change of the direction of the magnetisation in the solid recording media, microscopically a change of the directions of the electron spins responsible for the co-operative phenomenon of macroscopic magnetisation governed by the type and strength of interaction between these spins.

This recording is a special case of the more general dynamic behaviour of magnetism described by the concept of spin waves in ferro- and antiferromagnets, which are classified according to the type of spin interaction. Therefore it is of fundamental interest to test experimentally all possible aspects of these phenomena with highly sensitive specialised methods of fundamental research.

Four main problems will be investigated: the investigation of the influence of quantum fluctuations in the quasi-one-dimensional triangle antiferromagnets on the spin dynamics (including the Haldane problem) using microwave, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and light scattering technique; the investigation of the space-time instability in non-linear spin dynamics using high power microwave technique; the search for magnon-charge carriers interaction using the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) technique, and the magnetoelectric effect using microwave absorption experiments; and the investigation of the exchange interaction in thin films and layered systems by microwave and BLS techniques.
