Low-dimensional topology and combinatorial group theory

Objective

The long-term objective of the project is to classify low-dimensional objects up to some evaluation of their complexity. This will lead to a deeper understanding of the strange and mysterious world of low-dimensions and will serve as a source of new ideas. A table of 3-manifolds up to complexity 8 and to analyse it, will be created. It is known that all closed orientable 3-manifolds up to this complexity are graph manifolds, and the problem consists in organizing them into natural series. This is the task for the Chelyabinsk team. The report covering this period will aim to include the table of 3-manifolds up to complexity 8 and contain a detailed description of manifolds via special spines, framed links and Seifert invariants. Each manifold should be supplied with information on homology groups, Heegaard genus, fundamental group and with specific additional information.

The third year will be devoted to a joint analysis and summing up the computer results and those of theoretical investigations. The results will be discussed at a conference of all the participants in one of the participating countries. The final report will contain a detailed description of all results, including those of the computer enumeration, the computer programs and a list of publications related to the project.
