Extension of ELSNET to the NIS

Objective

The goal of the project is to add two new nodes from the NIS to the European Network in Language and Speech (ELSNET). Its primary objective is to support the co-ordination of European research and training activities which promote the development of speech and natural language (NL) technology. The long-term technological goal which motivates the network is the construction of integrated multilingual speech and NL systems with unrestricted coverage of both written and spoken language.

ELSNET has already established a wide coverage of sites in Western Europe and will now incorporate two new nodes in the NIS which have excellent research track records in the NL processing and speech areas. They have been active in international communication and co-operation but their links with the research community in Western Europe have been sporadic and incidental and they will gain considerable scientific leverage by exchanging information, research results, data and tools with the rest of the ELSNET community. The project will be further enhanced by joint research activities.

Apart from the development of tools, this collaboration will provide an active framework for the integration of the research group in the NIS into the European scientific community. Joint papers will assist the researchers in the NIS to use existing standards for presenting information. A day-to-day collaboration will help to reveal to the researchers in the NIS areas of interest in the scientific community in western Europe since there is no one-to-one mapping and they can adjust to a previously unknown infrastructure.
