Natural language processing: creation of linguistic resources and pilot applications

Objectif

This research aims to create linguistic resources in a modern computational linguistics framework and to demonstrate the practical possibilities of their application to pilot and prototype versions.

The development of these resources will be based on two advanced technologies of multilingual language processing: ETAP-3, developed at the Institute of Problems of Information Transmission (IPPI, Russia) and CAT2, developed at the Institute for Applied Research in Information Science (IAI, Germany), as well as on several smaller experiments in application prototyping, such as the syntax checker DIMACHECK (IAI), language teaching/learning software packages RUSSOLOG (University of Saarland, Germany) and MORPHOLOG (IPPI) and a text-to-speech/speech-to-text conversion prototype (Institute of Engineering Cybernetics, Belarus).

Additional goals of the project include: creating a broader basis for the construction of linguistic resources (lexicon and grammar coverage); collaborating with a new institution from the NIS; and constructing a few demonstration prototypes for promising application areas, such as syntax error checking, computer-assisted language learning and text/speech interface.
