Physico-chemical investigations of DNA interactions with synthetic and natural lipids

Cel

This project should improve the fundamental understanding of the physical, chemistry and biophysics properties of DNA in largely hydrophobic and mixed hydrophobic and hydrophilic environments. Thus it seeks to elucidate the nature of the lipid-DNA interactions as well as probe the detailed effect on the structure of exposed pieces of DNA to a controlled aqueous and hydrophobic environment. The methodologies that will be used range from specific sequence DNA synthesis to the relatively new techniques of velocimetry, dynamic light scattering and high-field NMR.

The research team that has been built up from Georgia, Germany, Ireland and Russia possesses the necessary skills and equipment. It exploits the excellence, experience and instrumental developments in the fields of velocimetry and ultra-sensitive differential scanning and calorimetry found in institutes of the NIS and allies them to research groups in west Europe that have complementary experience and essential capital equipment. The partners have collaborated in the past and this project will establish a long-term association and permit a good portion of the scientific work to be carried out in various NIS countries.
