Objetivo The adsorption process of metal ions and/or ligands from solution onto a hydrated oxide surface controls the migration of metal ions and organic substances in the environment and determines the mechanisms of heterogeneous catalytic processes. Their understanding is therefore important for chemistry, chemical engineering, biology and medicine. A central question in this context is the influence of the oxide support on the properties of the adsorbed metal ions. To investigate the interaction of the adsorbed metal ion with the support in a systematic manner, the adsorption of metal ions and the formation of ternary surface complexes on SiO2, Al2O3 and TiO2 as well as the kinetics of these reactions will be studied. Many different methods, UV-Vis spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy of metal ions and ligands carrying spin labels, NMR spectroscopy, electro- and photoluminescence spectroscopy, ESCA and EXAFS, will be used to obtain information on the distribution of the metal ions and the ligands in the heterogeneous system and the structure of the surface complexes. The magnetic resonance methods give, in addition, an insight into the rate and the mechanisms of the surface complex formation. The results will help to model the mobility of metal ions and organic pollutants in the environment and to improve catalytic processes in a more rational manner.
