Epidemiology of foot-and-mouth disease in the NIS

Objetivo

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease of cattle, pigs, sheep and goats and wild ungulates, characterised by loss of production and death in young animals. The presence of FMD has major economic consequences due to trade restrictions. Europe has now stopped vaccination against FMD, but the disease is present in north Africa, the Middle East and Turkey and is a threat to Europe. In addition, with the dismantling of the Communist Block, movement of people and animals between east and west Europe has increased. Although FMD is not present in Russia, it constantly threatens from the southern republics. Such is the speed of transmission that an epidemic of FMD could spread across Russia and threaten Europe. It is therefore essential that Western Europe develops contacts with the central diagnostic laboratory for FMD in Russia in order to upgrade its capability and introduce and support modern molecular biological diagnostic techniques.

The specific objective of this research is to study the molecular epidemiology of FMD virus strains previously isolated in Russia and those known to be circulating in the southern republics in order to identify the appearance of antigenically new strains and prepare appropriate vaccines for their control should they enter Russia. The mutual transfer of technology would include nucleotide sequencing, polymerase chain reaction and ELISA techniques.
