Research on breeding biology, migration, hunting pressure and wintering ecology of white-fronted geese in the western Palaearctic as preparation for the development of a management plan for this species within the scope of a Waterfowl Agree

Ziel

The main objective of this study is to gather basic scientific information about white-fronted geese in the western Palaeartic and to develop a management plan within the scope of a Waterfowl Agreement under the Bonn Convention. This joint research programme is based on a flyway approach and will consolidate co-operation between west European and NIS scientists.

It has several part-objectives: breeding biology; research on ecology in the arctic breeding area (Taymyr Peninsula) by an international expedition of scientists with the following aspects: annual breeding density, mortality rates in breeding area, annual reproductive rates, influence of predation, weather conditions, hunting pressure and feeding situation, moult. The expedition will catch and mark moulting geese in order to follow them during migration and wintering; migration research in NIS states and west Europe through resightings, using the waterfowl monitoring system of IWRD and organising a monitoring network in the NIS. Stopover and wintering sites have to be visited. The results of this project will be used to obtain more information about migration routes, stopover sites (e.g. information about goose concentrations), course of migration and mortality during migration; winter ecology research by a team of western and NIS scientists.

The project has the following aspects: migration movements during winter within the winter range in the same as well as in different years, use of wintering site, influence of disturbance and change of landscape on goose wintering, mortality rates during wintering, evaluation of all data and the development of a draft management plan for western Palaeartic white-fronted geese by an international team of scientists under the lead of IWRB.
