Taxonomy and bioacoustics of European grasshoppers, bushcrickets and crickets (Insecta, Orthoptera)

Ziel

Since ancient times Orthoptera have drawn attention because of their ability to form plagues of economic importance both in the tropics and in Europe. Recently it has become clear that the orthopteran species are most reliable indicators of the value of natural habitats and the effects of human influences. At the same time research on bioacoustics has revealed that acoustic communication in this group of insects is both quite sophisticated and most important for species-specific recognition. It has been clearly shown that taxonomy and bioacoustics fit into each other in such a perfect way that several taxonomic problems could be entangled.

Although Orthoptera have been studied intensively in eastern and western Europe, identification of a large number of species is still obscure. The aim of the project is to collect missing data on systematics and bioacoustics mainly in eastern Europe and to incorporate these data with the present ones available from western Europe in order to create a reliable identification key for all European species. In this way existing and new information could be integrated and applied to problems of economic importance (e.g. pest management) as well as habitat requirements such as pollution, disturbance of natural habitats, importance of natural reserves, involving these insects in all parts of Europe.
