Objective The project will incorporate two Russian groups of geneticists and cytogeneticists in a network of European scientists studying genetics and molecular biology in animal model systems such as the fruitfly Drosophila, so that the knowledge gained from the study of genes controlling cell proliferative disorders in this organism can be used for unravelling the mechanisms leading to comparable human diseases such as cancer. A saturation mutagenesis of the second chromosome of Drosophila (40 % of the genome) has been conducted in the framework of the European network in function of tumour genes in Drosophila and Xiphophorus and their homologues in mammalian and a similar experiment on the third chromosome is presently being conducted. Examination of lethal lines induced by insertion of a single transposable P-element has identified numerous genes causing either cell overproliferation affecting tumour suppressor genes or cell growth arrest affecting genes controlling mitosis. About 80 different genes have been identified and are presently under genetic, biological and molecular investigations. Within this context both Russian groups will contribute to the cytogenetic and genetic analyses of these mutants in Drosophila and the characterisation of their genes.
