Molecular physiology of nerve, cardiac and vascular cells: Ca2+ regulation

Obiettivo

Binding of Ca2+ ions to intracellular target proteins controls a variety of important cell functions. The concentration of intracellular calcium acts as a second messenger. The processes that control the concentration of intracellular calcium are related in nerve, cardiac and vascular cells.

The Ca2+ regulation of the following molecular events will be studied: gene expression, cell growth, cell differentiation and ageing; cell respiration by Ca2+ control of oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria; Ca2+ activation of contraction by Ca2+ binding to troponinC or to calmodulin; Ca2+ control of cell excitability by Ca2+ binding to membrane channels; and neuronal plasticity through Ca2+ control of presynaptic neurotransmitter release.

The results will extend the present understanding of important molecular events in the cardiovascular and the central neuronal system.
