Molecular and cytogenetical characterisation of the rye genome and evaluation of new genes for plant breeding

Ziel

The aim of the project is the characterisation of the rye genome by cytogenetical and molecular techniques including the evaluation of agronomically important genes. This will include the development and characterisation of a library of low copy probes from rye DNA as well as the utilisation of these probes for gene mapping and linkage studies.

The project will concentrate on genes for reduced height (linked with insensitivity or sensitivity to exogenously applied gibberellic acid) and photoperiodic response. The utilisation of molecular markers, closely linked to the agronomically important genes, in plant breeding systems will affect the efficiency of the selection of varieties, which are well adapted to the environmental conditions by realising a high yield potential.
