Fluid-mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies: application to C-O-H compositions

Objetivo

The aim of this project is to co-ordinate European research on the experimental mineralogy of fluid-mineral equilibria. Technology exchanges and transfers will be performed in the field of experimental petrology techniques, particularly for H2-bearing systems.

Modern trends in the area of fluid-mineral equilibria have stressed the importance of fluid composition. The behaviour of complex C-O-H fluids is actively studied by several research groups. These fluids are important transport agents in the deep crust, as demonstrated by the compositions of fluid inclusions. The following topics will be studied: composition of natural fluids from fluid inclusion data; evaluation of the fluid inclusion data and re-equilibration of the fluid inclusions; experimental studies of selected fluid-mineral equilibria as sources of information on fluid composition; transport and thermodynamic properties of C-O-H fluids and modelling; redox equilibria in C-O-H fluids and consequences for fluid speciation, fluid-mineral and fluid-mineral-melt equilibria; and the effects of high H2 pressures on melting of silicates and mechanism of incorporation of H2 and H20 in silicate melts.

The Russian participant working at Chernogolovka is known internationally for contributions to these different subjects and the scientists involved have developed exchange programmes of high quality with the west European participants in the current project. These exchange relations need to be pursued and formalised. The west European participants include two experimental laboratories (Germany and France), and a mineralogy/petrology/fluid inclusion laboratory (The Netherlands). They have a common interest in the geochemical behaviour of fluid phases in deep-seated processes.

On the basis of the outcome of the four investigated subjects, integrated research programmes incorporating Russian research groups will be developed. Results will be jointly presented at meetings and published in international scientific journals. They cover fluid inclusion techniques and interpretation: the planned studies will improve knowledge of the composition of the fluids trapped as inclusions in crystals and their application to the estimation of metamorphic conditions. Progress on the details of the mechanisms of re-equilibration of these inclusions is also expected.

The planned experimental studies will improve the existing database on mineral solubility under elevated temperature and pressure.

The largely unexplored effects of reduced environments and elevated H2 fugacities on phase relations, melting equilibria and volatile speciation in silicate melts will also be reported on.
