The mineral waters of Primorye, Russia

Obiettivo

This research aims to improve knowledge of the natural mineral water in the Primorye region. At present the information on this valuable natural resource is incomplete, yet with the foreseen development of the Far Eastern region the demand for high quality drinking water and water for health treatment is set to increase. The research will provide the scientific basis for any future development of the mineral waters.

Field surveys will be carried out in areas of known mineral waters as well as in new terrain to determine their regional occurrence and distribution in relation to the geology and hydrogeology. In situ measurements will be made of hydrogeochemical properties and a range of samples taken for chemical and isotopic analysis in a UK laboratory.

The database thus established will be used for an interpretation of the properties of the mineral waters - their residence times, circulation pathways, extent and nature of water-rock interaction, extent of any pollution, strategy for protection and the essential properties of the waters for drinking, bottling and therapeutic use.

The results will be reported to national and international organizations and prepared for publication via the scientific literature. The study will be used to allow a full exchange of information between scientists from the NIS and the United Kingdom in the field of hydrogeochemistry, and mineral waters in particular.
