Ground-based monitoring of the plasma environment and sounding of the Earth's crust by ULF waves

Obiettivo



Within the current project, a geophysical triangle consisting of the observatories l'Aquila (Italy), Niemegk (Germany) and Borok (Russia) will be organised. At these observatories additional equipment for magnetic and electric ULF measurements will be installed and maintained, and digital acquisition systems will be modernised and unified. The resulting network will permanently monitor the plasma dynamics in the ionosphere and the magnetosphere by controlling the wave structure of the terrestrial electromagnetic field. Data from low orbiting satellites will be used simultaneously for verifying ground-based methods of determining plasma density. The same multi-component data will be used for modifying the standard methods of magnetotelluric sounding, taking proper account of the spatial wave structure near magnetospheric field line resonances. The network will be a ground-based support to existing and upcoming satellite missions and global geophysical projects.

Within the current project the following results are expected: new methods for determining a set of Alfven frequencies at a given latitude and, consequently, the distribution of plasma density in the magnetosphere, based on the multi-component observations of ULF field, will be developed and tested; comparison of satellite data (e.g. IK-24 and FREJA.) with the results of ground-based hydromagnetic diagnosis; solution of a number of fundamental theoretical problems of MHD wave generation and propagation in the system atmosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere, essential for a detailed understanding of the physical mechanisms of electromagnetic energy transport in space; investigation of the effects of resonant ULF waves on the magnetotelluric methods. Improved reliability of magnetotelluric exploration will greatly benefit the geophysical industry. With the use of mid-latitude magnetic stations, new algorithms for automatic on-line detection and localisation of a magnetic substorm epicentres will be elaborated.

The space-time structure of near-surface electric turbulence and the input of ULF wave processes in the structure of atmospheric electric fields and currents will be explored. This project will be the first experimental study of the processes coupling geomagnetic activity and small-scale atmospheric electricity variations.

The database of continuous monitoring of an electromagnetic breathing of the Earth will be made available to the world geophysical community. The results of data analysis and theoretical modelling will be presented in the form of joint publications in scientific journals and will be submitted to international conferences.
