Dynamic soil structure interaction : vibration reduction techniques

Objective

Various techniques for vibration reduction will be investigated within the framework of this project. The Moscow State University of Civil Engineering will give primary emphasis to dynamic vibration absorbers and isolators as well as to interlayers of loose rock induced by explosion. In the former case, modern vibration theory will be used for the development of new, modified devices, while for the latter the effectiveness of shielding will be investigated on the basis of experimental results.

The Scientific Research Institute of Foundations and Underground Structures in Moscow, will analyze the response of structures on inhomogeneous soils and investigate vibration reduction by means of regulation of energy radiation to the soil from the foundation. The group of Athens will investigate vibration reduction from the superstructure point of view and apply methods of structural dynamics to specific soil conditions and vibration absorbers. The group of Berlin will focus on analytical and numerical methods for dynamic soil-structure interaction for layered inhomogenous soils and on verification of the solutions obtained on the basis of experimental results on model foundations.

The participants will compile a state-of-the-art report on the outcome of these studies.
