Problems of micromechanics of composites and structures under various interface conditions

Ziel

This project is devoted to analytical and numerical treatment of the mechanical behaviour of composite materials and composite structures. Particular consideration is given to layered composites, such as laminated plates and shells, as well as sandwich structures or other materials which show a layered configuration at the micro level. These materials and components exhibit a mechanical behaviour which is strongly dependent on the interface conditions between the individual layers. The macroscopic effective stiffness, which is some sort of material instability, changes considerably when the interface condition is changed. The simplest interface condition is represented by perfect bonding. In practice, however, perturbations of bonding in the manufacturing process due to gas inclusions or as a consequence of loading, delamination due to interface failure in pre- and post-bucking configurations, must not be neglected.

The project will provide a systematic and sufficiently consistent development of micromechanics of laminated and fibrous composites and structures under various interface conditions including: general statement of the problems; construction of general solutions of three-dimensional and two-dimensional problems at homogeneous precritical states; development and justification of effective analytical and numerical methods; computerized solution of some main classes of problems for composites, particularly for three- or two-dimensional states; and conclusions on the micromechanics of the analysed phenomena in fibrous and laminated composites.
