Concentrated energy beams in advanced materials development

Cel

Surface processing will be investigated systematically by means of concentrated energy beams, laser, electron beam, plasma and concentrated solar energy. These techniques are unique for tailoring surface properties such as extended solid solutions, metastable crystalline phases, and metallic glasses.

The following tasks will be carried out: determination of the main regularities of heat and mass transfer processes of innovative materials synthesis; evaluation of the advantages of treatment by combined energy beams of different physical natures to produce innovative materials; determination of the correlation between macroscopic coupled heat and mass transfer and resulting composition and microstructure; innovative materials fabrication by surface alloying, cladding and remelting by single and combined energy beam treatment and complex examination of the produced materials (surface layers).

Finally, the structural and functional characteristics of the surface layers (fatigue, wear, corrosion and thermal shock resistance) will be evaluated for potential industrial applications.

The following metallic systems will be examined: ferrous-based surface alloying by low-shear metals: Fe-Sn (In,Pb,Ga), the base metal is in the first position, alloying metal in the second position, alternative metals in brackets; and binary rapidly solidified alloys based on the Al-Fe, Al-Sn (In,Pb,Ga) systems.
