Joining of ceramic materials

Objectif

Due to their excellent high-temperature properties ceramic materials are being increasingly used in construction where joining techniques are available to ensure reliable bonds between the ceramic and other materials (ceramics or metals). A promising joining technique is diffusion welding. However, insufficient knowledge exists at present about the potential of this technique for ceramic-ceramic and ceramic-metal combinations.

The aim of this joint research project is to evaluate the possibilities and limitations of joining ceramics to other materials (ceramics or metals). Specific attention will be given to diffusion welding as a joining technique and to the material combinations alumina-alumina and alumina-metals (copper, stainless steel).

The project consists of three parts: the evaluation of the joining process under laboratory conditions; the evaluation of the joining process under practical conditions; and the development of procedures for quality control of the joints with emphasis on non-destructive testing.

The project will widen the possibilities of applying ceramic materials in the electronics and aerospace industries and, in addition, will contribute to the conversion of military products to civil products in Russia.
